This workshop is specifically catered towards those who have not taken a writing workshop with us before, or have only taken one or two and would like to get more acquainted. If you have taken a virtual writing workshop with us before, we kindly request that you do not sign up for this one to save space for our new members.No writing experience necessary! This workshop will introduce <a href="https://nywriterscoalition.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">NY Writers Coalition</a>—who we are, what we do, and where we've been—and will go over our workshop method before delving into our writing prompts.<h3>Choose What You Pay: We believe that everyone has the right have their voices heard. Join NY Writers Coalition's free virtual creative writing workshops. No writing experience is necessary, and writers of all levels of experience are welcome. Our work amplifies the voices of historically unheard and under-resourced individuals in our society, and we welcome people of all backgrounds. NYWC’s workshops are based on the Amherst Writers and Artists workshop method developed by Pat Schneider (detailed in her book Writing Alone and With Others) and are led by an experienced, trained workshop leader. Our leaders will receive stipends for their work, which we hope will ease the current moment of financial uncertainty among artists in some way—so even though all workshops are free, your participation will actually help support writers and activists!HowIn each workshop, participants will write a piece in response to optional prompts provided by the leader. You can write any genre and use this time however suits you best—to journal; make a to-do list; write a letter; create a poem, stories, essays, plays, or rants—or anything else that inspires you. After the writing time has elapsed, participants have the option—although they are not required—to share their brand-new pieces. Some workshops will make time for supportive, positive feedback, while others will only consist of writing and sharing what has been written. WhereThe workshops will be conducted via Zoom. You don't need an account to join, as we will provide a direct link, but you will be prompted to download the Zoom app on your phone or computer. You can participate via audio-only or with a camera (which is preferred but not required).WhenAt the moment we will be announcing new workshops daily. You will receive an email once a new workshop(s) is announced, with an Eventbrite link to RSVP—so if one workshop is full, please be on the lookout for future emails. Due to demand, please only sign up if you know you can make it. We partner with public and private institutions, social service agencies, and social justice organizations to provide unique, empowering ongoing weekly creative writing workshops throughout New York City.
