Program

What you Need to Know about Mortar and Grout
Brian Trimble, PE – International Masonry Institute
Everyone knows what mortar and grout are and how to specify them, right? Well, do you know you are wasting time and energy on specifying mortar cubes for compressive strength tests? Are you still using an f’m of 1500 psi for your masonry designs? This presentation focuses on material requirements for structural masonry. Which mortar types are preferred and which grout to use are covered in detail. Field testing of mortar and grout are discussed so you can specify the right procedures and products.

Masonry Lintel Design
Sam Rubenzer, PE – Forse Engineers
Masonry lintel design is a critical part of an efficient structural masonry solution. Their use can add significant capacity to the structural design and add robustness to the wall that limits cracking. In the past, we have made assumptions to simplify the analysis of masonry lintels and that has been a detriment to the architectural and engineering design of our buildings. Today, we have software tools to analyze complex integrated masonry lintels, and engineers should be utilizing those tools for both lintel and wall design. Engineers can see firsthand how different design problems are being solved with masonry lintels.

Grouting Masonry Walls, Mortar and Grout Testing, Building Block Walls
There will be a live demonstration of the grouting of masonry walls where Plexiglas will reveal what happens to grout during installation. Other tests such as a slump cone test and grout specimen will be demonstrated so you know what is right and wrong when you visit the jobsite. You can also test your strength in laying up a block wall.
