Community Conversation: Powerful and Dangerous

Join the Alice Austen House for a Community Conversation exploring the themes of liberty, freedom, and the ongoing fight for equality. Facilitated by Joseph Murphy from Humanities New York, this conversation will focus on Audre Lorde’s powerful poem, “On My Way Out I Passed Over You and the Verrazano Bridge.”A self-described “black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet,” <a href="https://aliceausten.org/powerful-and-dangerous/" title="https://aliceausten.org/powerful-and-dangerous/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Audre Lorde</a> (1934–1992) dedicated both her life and her creative talent to confronting and addressing injustices of racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia. A Harlem native, Lorde was a <a href="https://www.nyclgbtsites.org/site/audre-lorde-residence/" title="https://www.nyclgbtsites.org/site/audre-lorde-residence/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">resident of the North Shore of Staten Island for 17 years</a>, raising her two children there with her partner Frances Clayton from 1972 to 1987.This conversation will delve into the lasting impact of Lorde’s writing, extending our inquiry into the themes raised by her 1985 poem.Community Conversation programs encourage New Yorkers from across the state to share their thoughts and experiences and build community through understanding.
