BOMB’s Oral History Project joins Other Plans Gallery to present an intimate conversation with three New Orleans artists. Visual artists Willie Birch, Katrina Andry, and poet Brenda Marie Osbrey discuss the stakes for artmaking in New Orleans. The conversation will take place concurrently with Andry’s exhibition, Collective Enduring, which is on view at Other Plans through December 22.This event is open to the public.RSVP is required.Seating is limited and complimentary wine will be offered! <a href="https://bombmagazine.org/articles/2023/06/13/an-oral-history-with-katrina-andry/" title="https://bombmagazine.org/articles/2023/06/13/an-oral-history-with-katrina-andry/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">KATRINA ANDRY</a>A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, Katrina Andry received an MFA in printmaking from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge in 2010. Andry’s work is often in dialogue with the viewer, asking them to confront their own race and gender biases and to consider their effects on the quality of life of their community writ large. <a href="https://bombmagazine.org/articles/2023/10/23/an-oral-history-with-mr-willie-birch/" title="https://bombmagazine.org/articles/2023/10/23/an-oral-history-with-mr-willie-birch/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">WILLIE BIRCH</a>Willie Birch was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1942 and creates paintings, drawings, and sculptures that often center on spaces and everyday objects or scenes of daily life around New Orleans. Birch co-founded The Porch Seventh Ward Cultural Organization and the Old Prieur Street Project and Community Garden, which engage local artists, youth groups, and community members. <a href="https://www.osbeynola.com/" title="https://www.osbeynola.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">BRENDA MARIE OSBEY</a>Brenda Marie Osbey is the author of seven books, including All Souls: Essential Poems (LSUP, 2015). “Directions in Neo-Cartography,” her essay on ecology in work by contemporary artists of color, was commissioned by the Minnesota Marine Art Museum for the exhibition catalog A Nation Takes Place (2024). Studies of her work include Summoning Our Saints: the Poetry and Prose of Brenda Marie Osbey by John Wharton Lowe (Lexington Books, 2019). Osbey is a New Orleans native. The Oral History Project is made possible with a major grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Additional support is provided by the Dedalus Foundation, Toni L. Ross, and public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
