Director, Clinical Translation &amp; Core Investigator, Clinical Epidemiology, Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, &amp; Jodi Garner, MSc Strategic Collaborations Lead, Roche CanadaModerators: Adam Nelson, PhD Candidate, Dalhousie University &amp; Megan Mahoney, PhD, Director of Scientific Affairs and Training Programs, BioCanRx Panel description: The Lost in Translation - Navigating a Path from Discovery through to the Clinic panel will provide HQP with an overview of the processes of biotherapeutic translation for academics. The session will provide participants with an understanding of the steps necessary to bring a product to patients, including preclinical research, manufacturing, clinical trial applications, regulatory oversight and engagement with Health Canada, engaging key stakeholders for a successful project, and financing a project. The first 25 minutes of the session will include a case study presentation by Adam Nelson, PhD Candidate at Dalhousie University and BioCanRx HQP working group member, and an overview of translation by Dr. Jennifer Quizi, Director of Biotherapeutics Manufacturing Operations at BioCanRx. The remaining time will be spent in Q&A and discussion with experts in the field. Who should attend: This introductory session is suited for researchers working with cell or virus-based biologics (trainees, investigators and other highly qualified personnel) who want to advance their knowledge on moving biotherapeutic therapies towards the clinic.Panelists Bios:Jennifer Quizi: Dr. Jennifer Quizi is the Director of Biotherapeutics Manufacturing Operations at BioCanRx, a not-for-profit organization funded by the Government of Canada. BioCanRx has a mandate of accelerating the delivery of novel, cutting-edge immunotherapies to cancer patients in Canada and abroad through targeted investments in translational research and manufacturing. Previously within BioCanRx, Dr. Quizi held the position of Director of Scientific Affairs, where she managed the portfolio of scientific programs funded by the organization and engineered strategic partnerships to further the BioCanRx mandate. Prior to BioCanRx, Dr. Quizi was the Senior Clinical Research Program Manager for the laboratory of Dr. John Bell at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. In this role she was key in driving a number of large, multi-institutional translational research initiatives forward to the clinic. She also championed the establishment of a first-of-its kind training program that continues to this day to provide trainees with hands-on training in GMP manufacturing. Dr. Quizi has a number of years of experience with manufacturing biologics in her role as Operations Manager for the Biotherapeutics Manufacturing Centre in Ottawa, where they specialize in the production of therapeutic viruses for clinical use. Prior to this, she held the position of Clinical Research Scientist for a pre-clinical SME in the cancer space. Dr. Quizi holds a PhD in cellular and molecular medicine from the University of Ottawa.Michael Jamieson: Dr. Jamieson has just recently joined the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) as the Director of Clinical Translation and Core Investigator, Clinical Epidemiology where he is responsible for the development of programs to improve the clinical translation of technologies developed at OHRI. This will include providing regulatory and quality support for grants and ongoing research at OHRI and the development of a web-based Resource Centre that will give researchers, technicians and students access to regulatory and quality tools such as SOP and reagent label templates, regulatory guidance documents and international standards such as ISO 10993 for biocompatibility testing. Before joining OHRI Dr, Jamieson spent twelve years at the University of Southern California (USC) where he was the Associate Director of the International Center for Regulatory Sciences (ICRS) and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Regulatory and Quality Sciences. Before joining USC, Dr. Jamieson spent over twenty-five years in industry where he held various senior positions including the founder of three healthcare start-ups. Dr. Jamieson has been involved in a number of joint industry-academia research projects so he has an in-depth understanding of what industries expectations are with respect to working with academic researchers and what steps it will take to improve the current model for the translation of academic based research projects. This combination of industry and academic experience makes Dr. Jamieson uniquely qualified to provide the regulatory and quality expertise research groups need to improve the efficiency of the translation of their technologies from the bench to the bedside. Dr. Jamieson's research interests include the regulatory/translational/quality support of university-based researchers and the development of a new model for maximizing the efficiency of translating academic research and for conducting joint research projects between industry/not for profits and universities.Jodi Garner is a Strategic Collaborations Lead with Roche Canada focused on identifying and expanding partnerships to support evidence generation opportunities and advance an innovative healthcare ecosystem. She works proactively with research networks such as hospitals, NFPs, research institutes and health charities to identify potential "above brand" partnership opportunities and co-creates Roche’s funding initiatives. Prior to Roche, Jodi was the Senior Manager, Science and Industry Relations with the Ontario Institute for Regenerative Medicine working at the intersection of industry and academia helping to build therapeutic innovations, particularly in the field of regenerative medicine. This role built on her experience as a researcher studying stem cells and early embryo development at the Hospital for Sick Children where Jodi was Lab Manager in the laboratory of Dr. Janet Rossant as well as Facility Manager of the institute’s Pluripotent Stem Cell Facility. Jodi has a number of years’ experience working with industry to bring innovative technologies to market as well as in technology evaluation, business development and knowledge mobilization. She’s further engaged with various NFPs to support policy and education initiatives.
