You are invited to a discussion about race and racism in South Korea.The Black Lives Matter movement has gained international attention since George Floyd was murdered by a police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This particular discussion will focus on the experiences of blacks from the United States and Africa who are living and working in South Korea. After the speakers present, we will open it for discussion with attendees.Speakers confirmed so far:Mel Watkins is an independent researcher who has worked in English language and social justice education in Korea since 2013. After studying at the University of Manchester, she moved to Korea to observe its shift towards multiculturalism firsthand. She volunteered with TNKR in 2014-2015, and currently provides educational and professional workshops on how to navigate race, class, difference, and diversity in non-Western contexts for educational institutions and workplaces. Vimbiso Kombora came to Korea from Zimbabwe almost 13 years ago and worked with a church in a small city in Jeollanamdo for 7 years. During that time she also studied her Masters in Counseling at a university in Gwangu. Being the only black foreigner both in her church and university gave her a unique opportunity to gain an understanding of Korean culture. Being in church leadership also allowed her to work with foreigners from other parts of Asia and learn about their experiences of Korea. All these experiences have made her passionate about building bridges to help people better understand each other. She volunteered with TNKR during 2017 as a speech coach and was coordinator of the Track 2 Public Speaking program during 2019.Casey Lartigue Jr. is co-founder and International Director of the Teach North Korean Refugees Global Education Center (Korea) along with South Korean researcher Lee Eunkoo. He is co-editor of the book Educational Freedom in Urban America: Brown v. Board after Half a Century. He is a columnist and blogger for the Korea Times newspaper, the 2017 winner of the Special Contribution” Award presented by the Hansarang Rural Cultural Foundation, the 2018 winner of the Challenge Korea (Global) Award, and the 2019 winner of Challenge Korea’s “Challenge Maker” Award. He is a former member of the board of directors of the Black Alliance for Educational Options, the Board of Trustees of the Frederick Douglass Memorial and Historical Association in Washington, D.C., and a former member of the Young Executive Network of the Washington Scholarship Fund.* * *The event is being hosted at the office of the Teach North Korean Refugees Global Education Center near Sangsu Station (line 6, exit 4).$10 for TNKR members and volunteers$15 for the general public.Space at the TNKR office is limited.Parking: We have one space in front of our building reserved for us, and there is a parking lot next door at which we can usually use for parking when they have spaces available.Contact Casey Lartigue (caseylartigue@lovetnkr.org) for other payment options.
