The Ashland Food Co-op is proud to present a special screening of Farming While Black at the Varsity Theater. This inspiring film sheds light on the work of Black farmers and the vital role they play in building a sustainable and equitable food system.Leah Penniman, co-founder of Soul Fire Farm, reflects on the plight of Black farmers in the United States. From the height of Black-owned farms at 14% in 1910 to less than 2% today. Leah and her Soul Fire Farm cohorts help propel a rising generation finding strength in the deep historical knowledge of African agrarianism - and its potential to save the planet.Proceeds from the event will benefit BASE Southern Oregon—a community-driven organization dedicated to creating a welcoming, supportive space where Black individuals feel safe, respected, and empowered to express their cultural identities. BASE fosters connection, collaboration, and prosperity in our region.Come together for an evening of education, inspiration, and community as we celebrate resilience and advocate for a more inclusive future.
