Florida: Rights of Nature 101

At CDER, we are building a global movement for democratic and environmental rights.As we face overlapping environmental crises — from climate change, to accelerating species extinction rates, to ecosystem collapse — it is clear that we need to make a fundamental shift in how we govern ourselves toward nature. This is essential to protect human communities and the natural communities upon which we all depend.Our founders have worked with the first places in the world to establish legal rights of nature. Today, we are working with grassroots, tribal, and NGO partners and governments across the globe to develop, implement, and enforce Rights of Nature laws.We provide direct support for organizations & governments around the world.We work with governments, tribal nations, indigenous communities, civil society, and grassroots activists to protect the human right to a healthy environment and establish the rights of the environment itself – the rights of nature. This means securing the highest level of legal protection for humans and nature through the recognition of legal rights.Join us in this movement.

Thu. June 18 @ 7pm Eastern // Communities across Florida are mobilizing to protect the legal rights of rivers and other ecosystems in the face of red tide, algae blooms, and other threats. Join the <a href="https://www.centerforenvironmentalrights.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Center for Democratic and Environmental Rights</a> and the Florida Rights of Nature Network for a Rights of Nature 101 beginner’s webinar for Florida residents. Learn how people in communities can elevate environmental protections for Florida’s rivers, bays, estuaries, and other ecosystems by recognizing and enforcing their legally enforceable rights. The webinar will review the history of the Rights of Nature movement, including the relationship with indigenous rights and tribal governance, as well as discuss local and national Rights of Nature laws and court decisions. Presenters will also discuss the growing number of grassroots campaigns across Florida and how you can become involved. Who should attend: Florida residents interested in supporting and becoming involved with the Rights of Nature movement across the state.Duration: One hour. This event is free.
