Friends of Princeton Open Space(FOPOS), founded in 1969, is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization devoted to acquiring open space in Princeton for preservation, protecting natural resources, maintaining accessibility to trails, and providing environmental education. Throughout the Princeton region, FOPOS works with groups to support efforts to preserve and protect open space and the environment.Since its founding, FOPOS has helped to establish over 1,800 acres of parkland and a network of trails that nearly encircles Princeton.  Through grants and the contributions of hundreds of people in the community, FOPOS has helped raise nearly $10 million for the purchase of land and acquisition of easements on properties that might have been bulldozed for development.  In addition to land preservation, FOPOS also leads in stewardship, from creating and maintaining hiking trails, boardwalks and footbridges, to the removal of invasive species and the replanting of native varieties.FOPOS also sponsors community programs and activities, such as nature walks and educational workshops, and advocates for governmental actions that protect our water, land, animals and plant communities. Billie Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve

Join the Friends of Princeton Open Space (FOPOS) and South Jersey Wildlife Tours for a guided Woodpecker Walk on Saturday, November 23rd at 9:30am. We will explore the trails of the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve in search of the fascinating woodpeckers that call New Jersey home. Did you know that New Jersey is home to six species of woodpeckers, each with unique traits? From the tiny Downy Woodpecker to the large and striking Pileated Woodpecker, these birds are known for their distinctive drumming sounds as they search for insects in tree trunks. Whether we're spotting a Red-bellied Woodpecker or hearing the call of a Northern Flicker, this walk is a great opportunity to connect with nature and observe these amazing "drummers" up close.Space is limited to 20 participants; be sure to sign up in advance. BYO: Please bring water, binoculars and wear comfortable hiking boots. Meeting Location: Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve, 57 Mountain Ave., Princeton NJ 08540---we will meet at the main parking lot for this event right off Mountain AvenueCost: Adults are $15 each and kids under 10 are free.
