Guiding Good Choices Training of Workshop Leaders May 2025

The Center for Communities That Care is part of the University of Washington’s Social Development Research Group (SDRG). The Center provides up-to-date high-quality training and technical assistance that supports the sustainable use of the Communities That Care PLUS system.

This virtual training is designed to prepare individuals to deliver Guiding Good Choices to parents and caregivers.

<h5>WHAT IS GUIDING GOOD CHOICES® (GGC)?</h5><h5> </h5>Guiding Good Choices is an evidence-based program for parents/caregivers of youth ages 9-14. The primary goal is to create strong family bonds that motivate youth to follow family guidelines to increase the chance of better health and educational outcomes. <h5>WHO SHOULD USE GGC?</h5>Those who are working with parents of 9 - 14 year olds including; schools, social workers, home visitors, family service workers, public health agencies, preventionists, and prevention coalitions. <h5>GGC WORKSHOP SERIES</h5>The GGC workshop series for parents and caregivers is delivered over five weeks (six if delivered virtually). Each session is two hours and covers:<ul><li>Why parents may need new skills as their children enter adolescence</li><li>The Social Development Strategy, and how it relates to parenting</li><li>Setting and using family guidelines for behavior</li><li>Managing conflict and expressing anger constructively</li><li>Teaching children refusal skills</li><li>Involving children in the family</li></ul> <h5>GGC TRAINING OF WORKSHOP LEADERS</h5>This training prepares participants to lead Guiding Good Choices workshops in their community (both in-person delivery and virtual delivery). Participants will learn how the curriculum supports families by providing information and teaching skills that help caregivers promote family bonding through use of the Social Development Strategy. The training covers:<ul><li>Keys to success for preventative parenting programs</li><li>Facilitation skills</li><li>The Social Development Strategy</li><li>Risk and protective factor-focused prevention</li><li>How to handle difficult questions</li><li>Empowering parents and caregivers to make their own decisions</li></ul>Throughout the sessions participants will experience various approaches to learning including direct instruction, role-playing, and reflective dialogue. This 19-hour virtual training is delivered over one week (see detailed schedule below).The training is interactive with the expectation that participants attend via a computer (not a mobile device) with a camera and microphone, remain on camera and actively participate during the training, be prepared for each session by completing assigned reading preparing presentations. Each participant must have an active license prior to the first day of training in order to access the curriculum materials.
