SEE DETAILS BELOW ***Tickets are available until 10:30am on 5/21/2020 OR when capacity is reached***<h2>About the Series </h2>With the COVID-19 pandemic upon us, the faculty of the Columbia University’s School of Social Work have mobilized to form COVID-19 ACTION, with the mission of monitoring developments and disseminating information that can be helpful to social workers and the clients they serve. Trainings have been developed by the CSSW COVID-19 Action Team that includes a group of faculty and administrators who represent various aspects of social work practice, programming and policy.For more information on CSSW COVID-19 see the website <a href="https://blogs.cuit.columbia.edu/cssw-covid19resources/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">HERE.</a> The Psychoeducational Trainings: Psychoeducational models draw on an evidence-based approach and can be adapted for multiple settings and populations. The approach can be tailored to fit specific circumstances, and focuses on a learning exchange between facilitator and participant. It is strengths-based and attends to coping, stress management, increased insight, grief and loss, social support, and personal and community advocacy, while maintaining a social justice and anti-oppressive perspective.<h2> Webinar Description</h2>As of May 4, over 68,000 people have died in the United States from COVID-19. The death rate for Black Americans is 2.7 times higher than the rate for Whites leaving a catastrophic number of Black Americans grieving their loss. Covid deaths are especially difficult for everyone, but racism and the disparities it engenders further magnify the untoward outcomes of these losses.This webinar will provide a HEALING milestones model for psychoeducation on grief and adaptation to loss. We’ll moderate a discussion of the challenges of having a loved one die during the COVID-19 pandemic and how we might meet them. The focus of the webinar will be on the lived experience of grief in the African American community as told by Dr. Green, the distinguished Senior Pastor of Mount Neboh Baptist Church in Harlem and the impact of racial inequalities. We will also discuss the likelihood of elevated rates of prolonged grief and strategies that might help mitigate this.
