GISTWatch - A GISTEntertainment Virtual Event

Our fifth GISTEntertainment event will be GIST Read and Watch on June 25th at 12pm EDT.Our GISTEntertainment series continues with GIST Read and GIST Watch. We have changed the date to encourage more people to have time to read our selection, The Hours by Michael Cunningham and to watch the film. Nicole Kidman won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Virginia Woolf. During our event, we will have an open discussion comparing the novel versus the film. Some of you may wonder why we chose such a serious book in a time in which such difficult things are happening in our world. We did ask our members to vote on the title, and this was the book chosen. The Hours is actually a perfect book for these times, for although it deals with some difficult issues (Mental Illness, serious illness, restrictions on roles for women), above all, it is a book about the elevation of ordinary things and the value of love in the midst of the difficult. In the midst of a pandemic and a world crying out for justice and equality, it is those ordinary precious hours that define us. “There’s just this for consolation: an hour here or there when our lives seem against all odds and expectations, to burst open and give us everything we’ve ever imagined, though everyone but children (and perhaps even they) knows these hours will inevitably be followed by others, far darker and more difficult. Still, we cherish the city, the morning; we hope, more than anything, for more.” The Hours It is actually the “being in the moment” that ties all our GISTEntertainment activities together.During this critical time we are asking you to partner with us. Our suggested donation for this event is $10.
