The Northern California Association of Nonprofits (NorCAN) is a regional network of organizations and leaders connected in our dedication to strengthening our communities.NorCAN was established in 1999 by Humboldt Area Foundation (HAF) to serve the rural nonprofit sector in Humboldt, Del Norte, and Trinity Counties. Now a DreamMaker Project of the Ink People in Eureka, California, NorCAN is dedicated to connecting organizations that are doing good work in the region so that they can avoid operating in isolation. We believe that when organizations share information, expertise, and resources, they can be more effective and efficient in their work and make deeper impacts in the communities they serve. To support this goal, we provide a range of resources and services, including training programs, professional development opportunities, and networking events. Our aim is to help nonprofits to collaborate, learn from each other, and achieve their missions more effectively.

From Vision to Action: Fundamentals of Nonprofit Strategic PlanningA strategic planning process can help your nonprofit assess current and past operations, create a vision for the future, and determine the actions needed to achieve that vision. This interactive workshop is designed for both those launching a strategic planning process for the first time and experienced planners.Participants will learn to engage leaders within their organization and critical partners, utilizing data to develop specific goals, objectives, actions, and measurable outcomes. We will explore the significance of strategic thinking and the foundational elements of the planning process.Additionally, the workshop will consider how participatory methods in organizational planning can foster ownership and commitment, resulting in a plan that is actively followed rather than left on a shelf.You’ll leave with practical information and tools to help you and your team craft an actionable strategic plan. <h3>Workshop Approach</h3>In this workshop, we will focus on the process of developing a strategic plan that enables participants to manage progress toward a strategic vision. By breaking the vision into actionable, time-bound steps, we will emphasize the importance of regularly refining and adjusting the plan. Strategies will serve as guiding lights and signposts, directing multi-year commitments toward achieving results, while also being broken down into practical efforts.Regardless of where participants are in their strategic planning journey—whether they already have a big picture in mind or need to develop one—we will ground the session by covering the essential elements of a strong strategic plan. Our primary focus will be on the process of preparing, implementing, and refining plans to ensure that the strategy effectively guides the “what” and “how” of the work being done.We recognize that many attendees lead or work in smaller organizations, so keeping the process feasible, manageable, and relevant is essential. About Ursula Bischoff, JD, MSW, PhD:Ursula has extensive experience collaborating with private, nonprofit and public organizations to develop community-led solutions in the fields of education, justice, health and human services, and economic and workforce development. She helps clients build leadership capacity and partnerships, align resources, improve access to programs, and achieve concrete, equitable outcomes. She has run technical assistance and professional development projects for federal, state and local governments, taught master’s level classes in administration, policy and planning and community organizing, and served as a professional project advisor in public policy and social work programs.
