LCHRA May 2020 Virtual Meeting: Solving the Problem of Abrasive Leaders

We are an affiliate of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) with over 300+ members representing over 200 employers in the Lane County area. Due to COVID-19, the May Chapter meeting is being held virtually. The link to the virtual meeting will be sent out 24-48 hours prior to the start of the meeting; it will also be available on the online event page that is available to all individuals who have registered for the event.Prices have been modified to reflect the change to a virtual meeting; LCHRA members may apply for scholarship assistance for registration. You will be prompted to log in to Eventbrite to view the page; this page will be updated with meeting materials and the link to join the meeting.Event Summary:Abrasive leaders rub their coworkers the wrong way. Commonly referred to as bullying bosses, their destructive management styles erode motivation and productivity in organizations. In today’s highly competitive business environments, employers cannot afford the costs of disruption caused by abrasive leaders, including alienation and attrition of valued employees, harassment litigation, and retaliatory responses such as sabotage and workplace violence. Based upon Dr. Laura Crawshaw’s research and practice coaching abrasive leaders, these findings from The Boss Whispering Institute will address why leaders resort to bullying behaviors, why they deny their destructive impact, and what human resource professionals can do to effectively intervene. Participants will learn:· Adequate vs. abrasive leaders: critical differentiations· The most common characteristic behaviors of abrasive leaders· The origins of abrasive leadership styles: myths and realities· The dynamics of defensive aggression: Threat-Anxiety-Defense· Why their managers don’t intervene· What it takes to motivate an abrasive leader to modify their management style· Critical elements in reducing defensiveness when coaching abrasive leaders· How to motivate upper management to intervene in cases of workplace bullying.HRCI and SHRM Recertification Credits Applied For
