The South Southwest MHTTC (SSW-MHTTC) serves U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Region 6, including Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Our population of focus is mental health clinicians, supervisors, and program managers serving individuals with or at risk of serious emotional disturbances (SED) or severe mental illness (SMI); peer support providers; community mental health, health, or peer-run organizations; and single state agency administrators focused on comprehensive state public mental health systems.

Affirmative Care with Transgender and Non-Binary People

The contemporary experience of gender diverse people (including identities such as transgender, gender non-conforming, non-binary, and others) is one of profound contradictions. Popular culture and social media allow room for much more diverse identity and expression; however, gender diverse people in many parts of the U.S. and elsewhere experience a hostile sociopolitical climate. As such, gender diverse people need support from clinicians and educators now more than ever. This webinar aims to increase participants’ understanding of the diversity of gender expression, gender identity, and biological sex. We will strive to expand attendees’ knowledge beyond the gender binary by providing an overview of community experiences, identity markers and meanings, research related to the construct of gender minority stress, and potential differences in journeys for binary transgender and non-binary transgender persons. We will also touch on current events and how transgender community members are being impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.CEUs will be available upon request!This webinar is being hosted on Zoom. For grant tracking purposes, it is important each participant registers individually.Speakers:Sana Flynn (they/them/theirs) is a 3rd year student in the Counseling Psychology PhD program at the University of Houston and a member of the CORE (Coping and Resilience) research team, which works to study LGBTQ+ health disparities. Their research focus is non-binary people, identity concealment, and gender minority stress. Their clinical work is centered on college student mental health. In their free time, Sana enjoys spending time with their spouse and dogs, as well as working on art projects.Dani Soltis (they/them/theirs) is a doctoral student in the Counseling Psychology Program at the University of Houston. Their research, clinical, and advocacy work focuses on the mental health needs of those with marginalized sexual orientations, gender identities, and relationship configurations. Dani also has clinical experience providing and research interest in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) approaches. They are a member of the Coping and Resilience (CORE) research team at UH, which focuses on physical and mental health outcomes for LGBTQ+ individuals. Dani won the Clinical Intern of the Year Award (2018) for their counseling work with queer and trans populations of Houston at the Montrose Center. They are currently the graduate assistant at the LGBTQ Resource Center of the University of Houston, where they manage the peer mentoring program, queer discussion groups, and Lavender Graduation. Dani is a Texas transplant by way of Western Pennsylvania and is the guardian of two wonderful cats. Erica Rey (she/her/hers) is a doctoral student in the Counseling Psychology program at the University of Houston. Her research interests include bisexual identity development and health and the reduction of health disparities for gender and sexual minorities. Her clinical work has been centered on the mental health needs of diverse and non-traditional students and her clinical interests include treatment of comorbid PTSD and substance abuse. Her advocacy work focuses on reductions of barriers for transgender and non-binary folks; in the past, she has been a research assistant in the University of Houston’s Transgender Health Lab and has volunteered with Gender Infinity as a Planning Committee Lead for the GI Conference and with the youth group at Family Gatherings. Currently, Erica is a member of the Coping and Resilience (CORE) Research team at the University of Houston and a research assistant with Project PRIDE, which focuses on coping and resilience behaviors for young gay, bi, and queer men. In her free time, Erica enjoys creative endeavors and spending time with her partner and their two amazing dogs.
