For some we can save presets, define actions or set shortcuts, but there are others, more unique, that we just hate having to do them over and over again. This six-hour workshop is going to introduce you to the world of building your own productivity tools with Javascript for Adobe apps.Our journey starts in InDesign. From interactions with a text frame we will learn fundamentals like comments, variables, counting, indexing, loops and the object model. We then move to Illustrator to loop through all artboards while changing a specific part of their names. Back in InDesign we will build a script to do fake paragraph shading with a space bar offset in headings. This example teaches two types of conditionals (if and switch) and how to insert text into the app from the code.To finish the class we go back to Illustrator to have some fun with Fibonacci-controlled randomness over sequences of squares. This example was developed to quickly test an idea for a book cover – before drawing it by hand. In this example we learn to use arrays in loops and get an introduction to functions.For this workshop you need to have Adobe InDesign and Illustrator installed, any version. About a week before the class you will receive a quick tutorial to install Visual Studio, our coding app (free), in your Mac or PC. The workshop is online and very hands on, so it is recommended that you use two screens: one to watch, other to work.Gustavo Soares works as a type, typography and information design specialist. His background in magazine design set out his interest in type and information architecture, both pursued further with two masters degrees: MA Information Design awarded by the University of Reading, UK; and MA Type and Media, awarded by the Royal Academy of Arts (KABK), NL.In those years Gustavo learned to constantly reflect on practice, model what works and define effective workflows. His expertise found fertile grounds in extensive temporary and permanent wayfinding. Gustavo has worked as design lead or external consultant for projects like FIFA 2014 World Cup, Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Walk Rio and International Airports and Hospitals in Brazil.By having designed and published retail and custom fonts, he has an in-depth understanding of how type works. His productivity workflows always explore and take into consideration refined hierarchies and micro-typography.Gustavo has been Member of the Jury for two editions of the Bienal Tipo Latinos (2014, 2016) and hundreds of designers have attended his workshops in Brazil, Mexico and Chile. Currently, Gustavo is the Wayfinding Lead for Lima 2019 Pan-American Games.
