Historic Preservation in New York City Beyond the Pandemic

Organized by <a href="https://aiabrooklyn.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">AIA Brooklyn</a> and <a href="https://www.pratt.edu/academics/architecture/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Pratt Institute School of Architecture</a>, this panel discussion and open conversation led by Pratt Professors <a href="https://www.pratt.edu/faculty_and_staff/bio/?id=RG9uNHlCMDhxMGdRT3RHcXZ6VzZYQT09" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Rebecca Krucoff</a>, <a href="https://www.pratt.edu/faculty_and_staff/bio/?id=SWVVdjZFVWl1RFczSmNYekIyUEZlZz09" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Christopher Cirillo</a> and <a href="https://www.pratt.edu/faculty_and_staff/bio/?id=lackerma" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Lisa Ackerman</a> will explore how we can identify and retain the key elements of our communities as we struggle to rebuild from these trying times. Preservation has to focus not just on retaining our physical environment but on preserving the intangible heritage that makes places special to their communities. The necessary social distancing measures faced during the COVID-19 pandemic have endangered some of the most important aspects of NYC’s urban fabric such as local businesses, gathering places, cultural institutions, and community centers. By engaging in place-keeping practices we hope to find ways to return to a city that still resonates with the soul of the New York we have always cherished. Participants will learn about and understand strategies already being utilized to protect community character and heritage in light of the pandemic.Participants will learn about and have an opportunity to discuss/develop ideas and resources for future actions that may mitigate the negative impacts of the pandemic on community identity.Participants will gain knowledge of the global network of organizations that are working toward solutions to preserving heritage in light of the pandemic.A Zoom meeting link will be emailed out the attendees a day or two before the event. Maximum participants: 100AIA Credits: 1.5 LU
