California Community Builders (CCB) is a nonprofit public policy think-and-do tank dedicated to building power for communities of color. To accomplish this goal we produce cutting-edge research with a racial and economic justice lens;  Organize and support coalitions throughout the state to push for collective change; Engage in multi-sector advocacy that touches the public, private and nonprofit sectors; and train diverse young professionals to become leaders in policy, politics, business, and advocacy.

Welcome

Access to stable, affordable, and high-quality housing improves the lives of individuals and communities. The status-quo is clearly not working - homeownership rates in California are at their lowest level since the 1940s and communities of color experience even lower numbers, widening the generational wealth gap. This panel will explore innovative models for housing and homeownership production. Experts will share research and data, and practitioners will share experiences. Panel #1: Housing Innovation for Homeownership

Lunch will be served and Elizabeth de León Bhargava, Assistant Secretary of Administration, U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development, will deliver a keynote address on housing and homeownership. 

Lunch and keynote address 

The American Dream of homeownership is out of reach for so many - that dream is even further unattainable for Californians. As of June, California’s median home price was $787,000, as compared to the national average of $363,000 and those numbers continue to rise. While California has made some progress to increase access to homeownership opportunities, more must be done to truly move the needle. This panel will discuss the policy and political landscape in California - highlighting recently passed legislation and budget allocations while also focusing on what more can be done in the years to come.
