No more trying to be mindful alone.The Hive exists to develop creative, compassionate, and mindfully-engaged citizens in the Cincinnati region, and online through small group classes and workshops. We have curated a collective of proven teachers, facilitators, and spiritual directors to help guide your learning in mindfulness, contemplation, art and action. We hope you'll try a class and like it enough to become a regular member. Your partnership helps make this nonprofit possible.(As a social enterprise, the Hive shares our story with photos of classes and events. If you are opposed to sharing your lovely face, let us know and we'll do our best to avoid that. But, by using an event ticket you agree to let The Hive share your image in photo, audio, and video form. For Zoom classes we occassionally announce if we elecet to record- please let your host or faciliator know if you do not want to be recorded.)

Each participant will use an existing book that has imagery and/or typography and words that appeal to them, at least in part.  We will then partially paint over the book with gesso and add our response to the imagery each week using art journal techniques.  Although we will be using the same techniques as in our blank art journals, this approach provides a creative prompt to start working. Additionally students will be directed toward simple writing/drawing/creativity exercises to add mindful activity to their life at home by developing a regular practice of journal keeping – at least for a season!
Barb Smucker has a BA in Art and Psychology from Baldwin Wallace College and an MA in Student Personnel and Counseling from Bowling Green State University. She is currently a studio artist at the Pendleton Art Center and has taught countless art classes and workshops throughout the region. Barb strives to create a safe and fun atmosphere in the classroom and encourages students to tap into their personal creativity.
