Welcome to A Worldwide Perspective on the Role of End of Life Doulas!Join us for this FREE online event featuring doulas from Ukraine, Mexico, and the United States. Hosted by the Dying Wellness Initiative, part of the Global Wellness Institute, this event brings together doulas who are navigating the complex and diverse needs of communities across the globe.In Ukraine, where two-thirds of the population have lost a friend or family member according to a 2023 report by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, the need for compassionate end-of-life care has become urgent. In response, End of Life Doulas have emerged as vital caregivers, offering not only practical assistance but also emotional and spiritual support to those facing death. Their role has become increasingly important in a country where traditional support systems have been disrupted, and the need for personalized, compassionate care is more critical than ever.In Latin America, where death midwifery has been dominant in thriving traditional communities, end-of-life doulas are a new and welcome position that celebrates this traditional role. Under this contemporary role, their numbers are growing as they are empowered, and work to bridge gaps in care, particularly because hospice services are not a reality in most Latin American countries.Worldwide, the number of trained doulas continues to increase with a focus on cultural competence and adaptability. This event will explore how doulas meet the unique needs of different populations—whether it’s addressing the psychological impacts of war, respecting indigenous traditions, or supporting families in communities with strong religious ties. We will also discuss the implications of developing a global doula training program that equips doulas to serve diverse cultural contexts, ensuring compassionate and culturally sensitive care for individuals at the end of life, no matter where they are in the world.The event will be recorded and sent to everyone who has registered.Moderated by Christine Caldwell, Co-Chair for the Dying Well Initiative, Global Wellness Insitute, and Founder/Executive Director for the nonprofit, End of Life Psychedelic care, panelists include:Daria Bondar is an End-of-Life Doula based in Kyiv, Ukraine. Graduate of the UVM Professional EOL Doula Certificate Program. With a background in international law, Daria has dedicated the past six years to exploring the intersections of life, death, and psychological trauma through evidence-based, traditional, and innovative methods. She is skilled in energy practices, bath steaming, adult swaddling, and rebozo massage. Passionate about normalizing end-of-life care in Ukraine, Daria works with all forms of loss, guiding individuals and families through life’s most challenging transitions. Inspired by the quotes, “Through the wounds, light hits us” and “Even in darkness, you are doing a great job,” Daria aims to bring compassion and understanding to the end-of-life journey. She is married, has two sons, a dog, and a cat.Frances Pope, LPCC, LPC/S, LAC, LCMHC, is an end-of-life doula and mental health counselor living in New Mexico. Frances combines her 24 years of clinical experience as a licensed professional counselor and addictions counselor with her passion for end-of-life care, advocacy, and education. She is currently the lead instructor of the University of Vermont’s End-of-Life Doula Professional Certificate and Companion Animal End-of-Life Certificate programs. Frances also is the owner/operator of Sailing Away End-of-Life Consulting and Counseling services.Wilka Roig MA, MFA, PLC, is a transpersonal psychologist, death activist and doula, grief counselor, dream worker, ordained minister, educator, facilitator, writer, Taoist Arts instructor, musician, photographer, performance artist, silversmith, baker, truth-teller. She is founder and president of Fundación Elisabeth Kübler-Ross (EKR) México Centro, academic director of Espacio Formativo para la Integración de la Muerte (ESFIM), deputy director of education of EKR Foundation Global, EOL doula educator, BIPOC/International advisor, and Certification Program Manager of International End of Life Doula Association (INELDA), co-founder of Red Iberoamericana de Acompañamiento en la muerte y el duelo, and curriculum coordinator for the International Birth, Breath and Death Study Program. Her interests include the neurobiology of trauma, loss, grief, and relationships, conscious living &amp; dying, birds, stars, confectionery arts, and wine culture.
