Data sculptor Adrien Segal discusses translating data into physical forms by incorporating scientific research and digital technology.

<a href="https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_zHxTN3nITJa9xnZUhFiN9w" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_zHxTN3nITJa9xnZUhFiN9w</a>IIT Institute of Design (ID) invites 2020 Latham fellow <a href="https://www.adriensegal.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Adrien Segal</a>, data sculptor and adjunct professor of design at <a href="https://portal.cca.edu/people/asegal/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">California College of the Arts</a>, to lecture on this year&#x27;s theme of data and design. Adrien will discuss how she starts with data as a conceptual basis and incorporates scientific research, digital technology, material culture, and perception to manifest information into physical form. By translating data into physical forms, experience becomes the means by which information is communicated. Adrien believes information becomes knowledge through experience—a direct sensory perception of the tangible world around us. Adrien&#x27;s presentation will be followed by a Q+A moderated by ID faculty member <a href="https://id.iit.edu/people/zach-pino/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Zach Pino</a>. Adrien Segal is an artist based in Oakland, California. Her work has been exhibited internationally in galleries and museums, and is published in several books and academic journals, including Data Flow 2 and 500 Tables. She has been an Artist in Residence at the Bunnell Street Art Center in Alaska, Facebook Headquarters, the Pier 9 Workshop, Bullseye Glass, the Schmidt Ocean Institute, and Benchspace in Ireland. Adrien received a BFA in Furniture Design from California College of the Arts in San Francisco. In addition to teaching, she pursues her creative practice out of her studio on the former Naval Base in Alameda, California.<a href="https://id.iit.edu/latham-lecture-series/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">About the Latham lectures</a>Latham fellows share their emerging ideas with the IIT Institute of Design (ID) community and the wider public by giving a lecture hosted by ID and publishing freely available digital content in the form of a paper, article, or other presentation that acknowledges their fellowship. Richard Latham (1920–1991) was an influential figure in design planning and strategic design who studied design at the Illinois Institute of Technology in the early 1940s. Latham believed that the principles of design should be the core of business planning.
