This fall, we’re shifting our focus from personal to political advocacy, which is where TYP asserts the will of its members on key issues.

TYP ENGAGE is a platform for thought leadership and facilitated discussion that brings together influential and passionate young professionals throughout Greater Tucson. This fall, we’re focusing on political advocacy, which is where TYP asserts the will of its members on key issues, by answering three key questions:<ul><li>How can I advocate for issues that are important to me?</li><li>What can TYP do as an organization to advocate on my behalf?</li><li>What are the ways TYP is civically engaged?</li></ul> Join us for a summit designed to help you stay informed and maintain your mental well-being during this and future election seasons. Hear from TYP Members, Community Leaders, and Local Elected Officials on engaging effectively in the political process, understanding what's on the ballot, and critically consuming media coverage. This event offers practical advice, insightful discussions, and networking opportunities for anyone looking to navigate the complexities of election season with clarity and calm. About Our Speakers:Session 1: Dr. Catherine Nichols, Executive Director of Arizona List. A lifelong Arizonan, Dr. Nichols has spent the last fourteen years working to get women elected to local, county and state offices in Arizona. She has a Master’s in Women’s Studies, a PhD in Health Policy and decades of experience in Arizona politics including running statewide initiatives, congressional campaigns, and her favorite work – as the executive director of Arizona List helping progressive Arizona women change the state. In these roles, she drives membership growth, organizes grassroots voter engagement, and leads policy advocacy across Arizona. With a Master’s degree in Public Affairs from Indiana University, focusing on public policy and administration, Abigail is passionate about empowering young voters. She believes lasting change is only possible when people unite, working together to create a better future for Arizona.<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/gabriella-cazares-kelly-992612a/" title="https://www.linkedin.com/in/gabriella-cazares-kelly-992612a/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Gabriella Cazares-Kelly, Pima County Recorder</a>Gabriella Cázares-Kelly (she/her) is the Pima County Recorder, taking office in January 2021. She leads an office that oversees voter registration, early voting, and document recording for the county. She is a proud, union-dues-paying, former #RedForEd public school educator and community organizer. She is one of four women who co-founded Indivisible Tohono, a grassroots, community organization that provides opportunities for education and civic engagement for members of her tribe, the Tohono O’odham Nation. She was inspired to run for office after encountering many systemic barriers preventing people from simply getting registered to vote. She lives with her husband, Ryan, and their two children, who are now voting age. She is the first Native American to hold an elected Pima County office and one of only four Native Americans to ever hold a county-level office in Arizona. @GabriellaCKelly @PimaRecorder<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicole-barraza-0bb4361a5/" title="https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicole-barraza-0bb4361a5/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Nicole Barraza, Southern Arizona Leadership Council</a>Nicole P. Barraza is Senior Director of Governance &amp; Policy at the Southern Arizona Leadership Council (SALC) where she works with business and community leaders to advance the quality of life and economic vibrancy of our region and state through sound public policy. Prior to joining SALC, Nicole was teaching Spanish at Pima Community College. She is the member-elect for District 1 on the Pima Community College Governing Board. Nicole was a member of the inaugural Civic &amp; Political Leadership Academy cohort and is a 2020 Flinn-Brown Fellow. In 2022, she was selected by the Arizona Center for Civic Leadership at the Flinn Foundation to join the Fellows Council. Nicole also serves on the Pima County Commission on Trial Court Appointments and the St. Cyril School Advisory Board and previously served on the Board of Tucson Young Professionals. She holds a B. A. in Political Science from Wellesley College, as well a master’s degree and Ph.D. from Stanford University in Sociolinguistics and Modern Peninsular Literature. As a wife and mother, Nicole is committed to making a meaningful difference in the community she loves.Amy Fitch-Heacock, Arizonans for Reproductive FreedomAmy Fitch-Heacock transformed her personal struggle with accessing reproductive health care into a lifelong mission for abortion rights. Drawing on her formal background in public policy, she educated herself extensively and became a key advocate and nationally-recognized abortion subject matter expert. Amy has been instrumental in policy-making, education, grassroots activism, fundraising, and organizing campaigns and rallies to ensure people have safe and accessible abortion services. She brings two decades of experience to her role as Communications Director of Arizonans for Reproductive Freedom.<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/patrick-burns-9134505b/" title="https://www.linkedin.com/in/patrick-burns-9134505b/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Patrick Burns, City of Tucson Ward 2 Council Office</a>Session 3: Media Role in Elections + What's on the Ballot Overview<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/beckypallack/" title="https://www.linkedin.com/in/beckypallack/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Becky Pallack, Arizona Luminaria </a>Becky Pallack is a journalist and co-founder of Arizona Luminaria. Before that, she worked at the Arizona Daily Star as a reporter and product manager for 18 years. She grew up in Yuma, went to college in Flagstaff, and lives in Tucson.<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/caitlincschmidt/" title="https://www.linkedin.com/in/caitlincschmidt/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Caitlin Schmidt, Tucson Spotlight</a>Caitlin Schmidt has lived in Tucson for 20 years and spent a decade reporting for the Arizona Daily Star before co-founding the Tucson Agenda. She’s an adjunct instructor at the University of Arizona School of Journalism and sits on the boards of several professional organizations. Susan Barnett is a native Tucsonan who previously worked for La Estrella de Tucson, the Arizona Daily Star’s Spanish-language publication, and the Tucson Agenda. She’s pursuing a master’s degree in bilingual journalism and has worked as a talk show host and digital producer at various local outlets.
