His first job at Kurzweil AI in 1987 was implementing speech recognition systems in physicians’ offices, which led to the transformation of the multibillion dollar medical transcription industry. His work, funded by two $2 million grants from the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology, in the 1990s at Kurzweil and 2000s at 3M and Nuance, established use of natural language processing for medical coding and billing. More recently, while serving as Chief Product Officer for Net Health, a Carlyle-backed digital health company, he led the purchase of Tissue Analytics, a machine vision start-up from Johns Hopkins, and led that product to receive “break-through status from the U.S. Food and Durg Administration for its ability to measure and predict the healing rate of wounds.
