Learn Afro-Cuban rhythms and improvisation in rumba, a foundation of salsa and timba. Maestro Sandy demos Matanzas style.

The Neal Rantoul Vault Theatre

This workshop will provide students with the basic rhythms and some principles forimprovisation in the seminal Afro-Cuban musical genre called rumba one of the buildingblocks of modern Afro-Latin music like salsa and timba. Maestro Sandy will demonstratethe traditional Matanzas style (popularized by the group Muñequitos de Matanzas).Drums will be available but students are encouraged to bring their own conga drum ifthey have one available. No experience necessary.Este taller proporcionará a los estudiantes los ritmos básicos y algunos principios parala improvisación en el fundamental género musical afrocubano llamado rumba, pilar demúsicas afrolatinos modernas como la salsa y la timba. El maestro Sandy demostraráel estilo tradicional matancero (popularizado por el grupo Muñequitos de Matanzas).Tenemos congas y tumbadoras disponiles pero se recomienda que estudiantes conacceso a un tambor traigan el suyo.
