<p>This virtual program is a conversation between Art Muse Director Dr. Ross Karlan and multi-disciplinary Brazilian artist Fernanda Froes to explore the world of natural pigments in their geographic and historical contexts. Froes’ work is grounded in the creation of her own pigments based on historical recipes, sometimes dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, and using botanical elements like brazilwood, mangrove, and indigo. The conversation will delve into Froes’ artistic practice, her deep research on the history of these pigments, and how artists are utilizing these materials as a means of ecological conservation. This interview is also presented in tandem with a number of Pacific Standard Time exhibitions, including “We Live in Painting: The Nature of Color in Mesoamerican Art” at LACMA, “Blue Gold: The Art and Science of Indigo” at the Mingei International Museum, "Sangre de Nopal/Blood of the Nopal: Traditional Ecological Knowledge and Contemporary Art” at the Fowler Museum, and “Ancient Wisdom for a Future Ecology: Trees, Time, and Technology” at the Skirball Cultural Center.</p>
