Why does what helps us live - to breathe, to move, and to stay active - eventually begin to work against us? We will discuss how mitochondria - the small “engines” of the cell - use oxygen, provide us with energy, and at the same time accelerate aging. We will cover the fundamental principles and key facts behind this process. Лауреат премии «Просветитель» (2020) и Беляевской премии (2021). Автор книги “Хлопок одной ладонью: как неживая природа породила человеческий разум” (Альпина Нон-Фикшн, 2020; Prometheus/Swift Press, 2025). Почему нам всё время хочется чего-то не того? Казалось бы, современные люди, следуя неопровержимым фактам медицины и психологии, должны правильно питаться, обращаться друг с другом вежливо, и проводить свободное время, безмятежно играя на лире. Но все мы почему-то так и норовим съесть какую-нибудь гадость, на кого-нибудь обидеться, кому-нибудь нагрубить, и окончательно испортить себе настроение цифровым супом соцсетей. Почему мы всё время воюем с собственным мозгом? Можно подумать, что это проклятие современного мира – что это цивилизация испортила нам с мозгом отношения, а пещерный человек жил исключительно счастливой и здоровой жизнью безо всяких соцсетей и вредной пищи. Но нейробиолог Николай Кукушкин, утверждает, что и пещерным людям хватало своих собственных тревог – так уж устроен мозг. В этом научные исследования согласны с древними буддийскими постулатами: неудовлетворённость жизнью заложена в нас от рождения. Zen and the Art of Taking Care of Your Own BrainNikolay Kukushkin is a neurobiologist, a specialist in the molecular mechanisms and evolution of memory, a science communicator, and an adjunct professor at New York University. Laureate of the Enlightener Prize (2020) and the Belyaev Prize (2021). Author of the book One Hand Clapping: How Inanimate Nature Gave Rise to the Human Mind (Alpina Non-Fiction, 2020; Prometheus/Swift Press, 2025). Why do we constantly want the wrong things? It would seem that modern people, guided by the undeniable facts of medicine and psychology, should eat properly, treat each other politely, and spend their free time peacefully playing the lyre. Yet for some reason we are always tempted to eat junk, take offense at someone, snap at someone else, and completely ruin our mood with the digital soup of social media. Why are we constantly at war with our own brain? One might think this is a curse of the modern world – that civilization has damaged our relationship with our brain, while prehistoric humans lived exclusively happy and healthy lives without social media or unhealthy food. But neurobiologist Nikolay Kukushkin argues that cave dwellers had more than enough of their own anxieties – that is simply how the brain is wired. Here, scientific research agrees with ancient Buddhist postulates: dissatisfaction with life is built into us from birth. Что происходит, когда писатель работает вместе с искусственным интеллектом – не как с инструментом, а как с партнёром? Михаил Эпштейн представит результаты необычного эксперимента: совместные с ИИ опыты в поэзии, прозе, филологии и литературной критике. И попробует доказать: ИИ пока не способен заменить человеческое творчество, но может пробудить его – стать триггером новых идей, зеркалом стиля, провокатором воображения. Muse from the Machine. Can AI Be a Co-Author?Mikhail Epstein is a philosopher, philologist, cultural theorist, literary scholar, and literary critic. He is a Distinguished Professor of Cultural Theory and Russian Literature at Emory University (Atlanta, USA). What happens when a writer works together with artificial intelligence – not as a tool, but as a partner? Mikhail Epstein will present the results of an unusual experiment: collaborative explorations with AI in poetry, prose, philology, and literary criticism. He will attempt to demonstrate that AI is not yet capable of replacing human creativity, but it can awaken it – becoming a trigger for new ideas, a mirror of style, and a provocateur of imagination. Кто и зачем придумал соц-арт?Виталий Комар – художник, основатель соц-арта. Его работы хранятся в коллекциях нью-йоркского Метрополитен-Музея и MoMA. Художник Виталий Комар половину жизни провел в СССР и почти столько же – в Америке. Что такое соц-арт сегодня, через 50 лет после того, как появился этот термин? Возможно ли рождение новой волны соц-арта? Творчество Виталия Комара было как индивидуальным, так и коллективным. Он создавал свои работы совместно с Александром Меламидом, но что произошло, когда арт-группа распалась? Кстати, кроме Александра Меламида, Комар работал с композитором Дэйвом Солдьером, флюксус-музыкантом Шарлоттой Мурман, самим Энди Уорхолом, а также с шимпанзе Микки и слонихой Рене. А последние работы он делает в сотрудничестве с ИИ. Обо всем этом он расскажет на своей лекции.Лекция пройдет на русском языке~Vitaly Komar. Who Invented Sots Art – and Why?Vitaly Komar is an artist and the founder of Sots Art. His works are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Artist Vitaly Komar spent half of his life in the USSR and nearly as much in America. What is Sots Art today, fifty years after the term first appeared? Is a new wave of Sots Art possible? Vitaly Komar’s творчество was both individual and collective. He created works together with Alexander Melamid – but what happened when the art group dissolved? Besides Alexander Melamid, Komar collaborated with composer Dave Soldier, Fluxus musician Charlotte Moorman, Andy Warhol himself, as well as with a chimpanzee named Mickey and an elephant named Renee. His most recent works are created in collaboration with AI. He will speak about all this in his lecture.Lecture will be held in Russian 6 Июня, 19:30 (Двери в 19:00)Александр Плавин. Тишина, которая кричит: как радиоастрономия “видит” чёрные дырыАлександр Плавин – астрофизик, радиоастроном, исследователь черных дыр в Гарвардском университете. Черная дыра сама по себе не видна, но пространство вокруг нее заполнено горячей плазмой, магнитными полями и частицами, разогнанными до околосветовых скоростей. Эта среда генерирует излучение в радиодиапазоне, которое можно зарегистрировать. Александр Плавин объяснит, как сфотографировать то, чего не видно, с помощью телескопа размером с Землю. На лекции будут показны первые изображения тени черной дыры: что на них на самом деле изображено, почему светится только половина кольца и как это помогает понять, работает ли теория относительности Эйнштейна в космосе. The Silence That Screams: How Radio Astronomy “Sees” Black HolesAlexander Plavin is an astrophysicist and radio astronomer, a researcher of black holes at Harvard University. A black hole itself is invisible, but the space around it is filled with hot plasma, magnetic fields, and particles accelerated to near-light speeds. This environment generates radiation in the radio range that can be detected. Alexander Plavin will explain how it is possible to photograph what cannot be seen using a telescope the size of the Earth. The lecture will present the first images of a black hole’s shadow: what is actually shown in these images, why only half of the ring is glowing, and how this helps us understand whether Einstein’s theory of relativity works in space.
