Description

40-Hour Medical Interpreter Training Course

This is a 5-day training course consisting of 5 days of training.
This class will be taking place on Monday, July 27- Friday, July 31, 2015.
Attendees
must attend each day of classes.

Prior to being accepted into the course, prospective trainees MUST take an over-the-phone oral Language Fluency test in both English and the non-English languages. Once you have sucessfully completed this test, you will receive a registration link for the course.

Medical interpreting is a specialization within the field of interpretation.

This course is an introductory medical interpreter training course. Bridging The Gap is a nationally-recognized program that provides actively working interpreters and those seeking to become interpreters, with the fundamental theoretical and practical knowledge required for success in the profession and in helping the community. This course is taught in English, with 3 hours of each training day reserved for language coaching practice in your target language. A light breakfast will be provided.

This course will focus upon:

  • Interpreting Logistics

  • Professional Code of Ethics (IMIA, NCIHC and CHIA)

  • Modes of Interpreting

  • Standards of Practice

  • Legislation Related to the Field of Interpreting (Title VI and HIPAA)

  • Advocacy

  • Cultural Competency (As reflected by the Office of Minority Health)

  • Interpreter Role Playing

  • Professional Development

Participants of the course will receive the following:

  • The new Bridging The Gap Basic Textbook for Medical Interpreters

  • The Guide to Common Medications

  • The Cross Cultural Health Care Program Bilingual Medical Glossary
    (Available in 23 languages)

What Makes This Course Unique?

  • Participants will receive Bridging The Gap training, in addition to receiving language-specific training

  • Participants will receive a Language Coach in order to practice interpreter role-playing based upon real-life scenarios for 3 hours during each training day, during which only the target language will be spoken

  • Upon successful completion of both a written and an oral exam, participants will receive the Bridging The Gap Certificate of Successful Completion

  • Guest speakers to discuss topics relevant to medical interpreting
