Description

This class will equip you for all manner of automotive welding, whether you want to weld in a floor pan, patch panel, or learn to weld up accessories for your vehicle.

We will show you how to weld thin (20 guage) materials and thicker materials, up to 5/16ths using the type of MIG welding equipment typically available to enthusiasts working in a home shop.

We will demonstrate and help you use TIG welding equipment so that you can determine which process suits you.

Thinner materials are very difficult to weld. Your chances of success will be greatly improved if you use chill plates, back up bars, clecos, flanges and dogs. In other words, you will learn tools and techniques used by professionals to generate results as easily as possible.

Cutting, fitting, and grinding can all either improve or eliminate your chance of success, we will show you the tools and techniques that are appropriate to your work environment and budget.

Class will be taught in a structured but relaxed manner. You can expect to spend the bulk of your time "hands on" developing and improving your skills and comprehension.

We supply all tools, materials, and equipment required for the class. Please wear heavy shoes and long pants.

Class is not intended for project work please do not bring in something for "one little weld" seriously.

This class will be taught as a series. You can attend every class or drop in to a given class that is most relevant to your needs.

This is Section 5

Section 1: mig welding theory, practice, working on 16 guage to 20 guage material. Fixing mistakes, controlling warpage, using the tools on hand. An overview of TIG welding hands on work with MIG and TIG
Being able to weld like this means never having to buy beer again.

Section 2: mig welding theory, practice, more TIG welding theory and practice. Working on thin materials, intro to chill plates, back-up bars and electrode size and type. The differance between expertise and knowing how to sound like one.

Section 3 : Fitting, how to cut out, old material, make patterns, allow for kerf, and select the most effective and least dangerous tool for a given job. How to avoid all but the most nessecary stitches and tetanus shots.

Session 4: Fit up and welding of panels, controlling distortion, clamping and work holding, improvised clamps, blind welds, clecos, rivets and abrasive work. If I had thought of this before wrecking everything...

Section 5: out of position welding. Welding overhead. Exotic welding techniques and materials, problems specific to welding on cars, the alternator and battery. Grease and blood as byproducts of recreational activity.

Section 6: Problem solving, dealing with mediocre equipment, buying used equipment, compromise welding, dealing with horrible fit ups and weld zone contamination, dealing with very thin, rusted material. If I promise beer and football on a plasma screen, can I turn it into free labor without jeapordizing a key social relationship?
