Saint Louis University Special Collections invites current SLU students, faculty, staff, and Library Associates to learn the basics of paste paper making, a four-hundred-year-old tradition in which colored starch paste is used to decorate dampened paper. During the hour-long session, participants will view a range of paste paper examples from the Rare Books collection, learn how to recognize historically popular techniques, and make their own paste papers. Necessary supplies will be provided free of charge, but participants are welcome to personalize their designs with tools from home (such as rubber stamps, colored papers, or print-outs of favorite texts).
Workshop registration opens on Monday, March 28th at noon.
This event is being offered as part of a series of book arts workshops organized in conjunction with The Binder’s Art: Techniques in the History of Decorative Bookbinding, an exhibit of rare books on display in Pius XII Memorial Library Room 307 until July 31st. The exhibit is free and open to the public Monday throughFriday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
