Who We Are:
Southeast Louisiana Legal Services (SLLS) is a non-profit law firm whose mission is to provide free civil legal assistance to low-income persons. SLLS and its predecessor in the New Orleans area, the New Orleans Legal Assistance Corporation, have been on the frontline for the past 47 years providing a legal safety net to folks at the times in their lives when they need help the most. SLLS is the largest provider of civil legal aid in Louisiana serving half of the entire low-income population of the state in 22 parishes. 1 in 4 people in the New Orleans area are eligible for free legal assistance with incomes at or below poverty guidelines.
What We Do:
SLLS works daily to protect domestic violence from abuse, represents abused and neglected children in the foster care system, protects elderly consumers from identity theft and consumer fraud, prevents hard-working homeowners from losing their homes to foreclosure, removes barriers to accessing healthcare, education, and employment, and helps people with living with disabilities obtain opportunities. A recent study found that SLLS annually secured or protected $36 million in benefits for its clients.
In 2013, SLLS handled about 10, 000 cases of which:
42% Family Law/Domestic Violence
15% Employment/Public Benefits
9% Child In Need of Care
