About: Often pain and anxiety are our greatest challenges in childbirth. Learning to use our mind to work with these challenges can make a huge difference in our labor and delivery experiences. The Mind in Labor workshop is a time to look deeply at pain and fear in childbirth and to cultivate present moment awareness for meeting whatever childbirth experience might unfold.
In this workshop we will:
- Practice mindfulness and its applications for working with pain and fear during labor
- Understand the mind/body connection in childbirth and how mindful awareness can be a critical element in facilitating the birth process
- Experience using the breath as an anchor to the present moment for maintaining the optimal physiology for childbirth
- Tap into inner reservoirs of strength, confidence and courage
- Learn how to be fully present to give comfort and support as a birth partner
- Begin or deepen an understanding of the power of mindfulness—moment-to-moment awareness—for the challenges of birthing and parenting

Instructor: Danielle Schuman-Olivier, CNM, MSN
Danielle Schuman-Olivier entered midwifery school at Yale University in 2002, the same year she went on her first meditation course and delved into learning yoga. She has attended births in hospitals, free-standing birth centers, at home and participated in the National Health Service Corps all the while continuing to grow her personal meditation and yoga practice. When she met Nancy Bardacke, the founder of Mindfulness-Based Childbirth & Parenting (MBCP) in 2013, she realized she had found a true passion by combining both worlds. “MBCP draws from the ancient practices of midwifery and mindfulness to empower women and partners to be fully present first in their birth experience and then for their child. It is a childbirth education class and so much more.” Danielle is the mother of two kids both born with midwives. She is currently a practicing nurse-midwife at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, MA (www.mamah.org) and uses the skills she has gained from MBCP everyday to cultivate a balanced and compassionate life.
