Welcome and Introductions

10:15am – 11:45am
Privacy in the Age of Digital Medicine: A Path Forward for Life Sciences Companies

Innovations in digital medicine are transforming healthcare. The convergence of technology and medicine – through wearables, mobile apps, and advanced data analytics – offers unprecedented opportunities for consumers to manage their health and wellness, with the potential to improve health outcomes and reduce costs. The data collection that can drive positive change also presents privacy compliance challenges that can be difficult to meet with the existing patchwork of US privacy laws. Different frameworks exist for collecting, using and sharing data in consumer-generated wellness data and apps versus those that interact with health system data, and the regulatory landscape is evolving. This session will focus on how companies navigate those frameworks, best practice for building privacy into app development, supporting both user trust and continued innovation.

12:00pm – 1:00pm
Luncheon Keynote Address

Digital health has attracted over $2B in venture funding in the first half of 2016 keeping pace with the levels seen in the past few years. Yet, startup exits are limited and public companies are underperforming the broader market.

Kash Kapadia, Founder and CEO of Digital Directive and formerly head of digital health at Stanford Health, will provide an overview of the digital health investment landscape, opportunities for value creation, key considerations for partnering with health providers, challenges and barriers due to reimbursement, regulation, security and privacy, and recommendations for companies developing innovative solutions.

1:00pm – 2:30pm
The Cybersecurity Battle Advances into Healthcare: How Life Sciences Companies are Arming Themselves to Respond

The healthcare and life sciences sector may be a ground zero in the battle against cybersecurity threats. Today’s cybersecurity challenges are varied and extensive: ranging from social engineering and insider threats to ransomware and state-sponsored hacking. At the same time, the threats are rapidly expanding as new technology develops, more devices are connected to the internet and criminals become more sophisticated. In the meantime, governments are increasingly concerned about data security in the healthcare and life sciences industries. Regulators, such as the HHS, FTC and FDA, have increased enforcement activities and developed additional guidance setting forth cybersecurity expectations. As a result, the era when it was sufficient for some healthcare and life sciences companies to approach cybersecurity as a secondary concern to be handled by the IT department alone is rapidly coming to an end. This session will explore the changing cybersecurity landscape and the ways in which life sciences companies are rising to meet the challenges ahead.
