Gettin' By - A Game of Scarcity Webinar

Gettin' By

Well-intentioned help misses the mark when it assumes that a person can receive it and act upon it in a certain way. That's why epidemiologist Linda K. Riddell created Gettin' By, an accredited continuing education training for teachers, doctors, case managers, and other professionals to work more effectively with students, patients and clients who are experiencing poverty. Many poverty simulation trainings focus on the hassle of coping with poverty and they generally overlook how poverty affects thinking and decision-making. Gettin’ By uses real-world scenarios and brain science to simulate how poverty changes a person's ability to process information and make logical decisions, impairing certain functions while enhancing others.

Gettin' By participants learn:

  • How poverty shapes health and education outcomes
  • How to recognize the mental burden of poverty and its effect on the brain
  • How to redesign approaches to more effectively serve people experiencing poverty.

Linda K. Riddell is an epidemiologist and population health scientist specializing in poverty, social economic status, and health policy and management. She holds a master’s degree, a bachelor's degree and keeps abreast of developments with courses at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Michigan.

Riddell dedicates her career to helping clients measure, understand, and improve health especially for low-income and disadvantaged people. She works with state governments, private institutes, and large insurers as a data scientist. Projects range from long-term care capacity planning to HIV care management. Her work is regularly featured at regional and national conferences including:

  • National Education Association
  • American Academy of Pediatrics
  • Tufts University Pediatric Residency Program
  • North Country Health Consortium
  • National Association of Benefits and Insurance Professionals
