The Hive 3747 is a FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics team based in Sandy, Utah, operating out of Beehive Academy. The team has demonstrated significant competitive success, including winning the top award in the state - the Utah Inspire Award for the 2023-2024, 2024-2025, and 2026 seasons.

Outreach and Impact

The team's outreach objective is to expand the FIRST program in Utah by mentoring, coaching, and assisting teams. Key accomplishments include:

• FLL Leadership: Serving as the Program Delivery Organization (PDO) for Utah FIRST Lego League (FLL), managing 187 teams.
• Team Growth: Starting 7 new FIRST teams and mentoring 8 teams this season.
• Community Engagement: Completing 87 outreach events and over 2,000 outreach hours, reaching 11,000+ people.
• Advocacy: Collaborating with legislators at the Utah State Capitol to advocate for STEM funding.

Technical Innovation: "Topaz"

The team’s most sophisticated robot, Topaz, was developed through a top-down CAD process and over 1,200 hours of engineering.

• Design Philosophy: The team utilizes a "7 S's" design standard: Simplicity, Standards, Symmetry, Strength, Stiffness, Stability, and Speed.
• 2-Robot System: The team employs a two-robot system, allowing for simultaneous mechanical upgrades and programming development.
• Key Mechanisms: Topaz features a dual-roller coaxial intake, a unique rail-based indexer ("Raildexer"), and a high-speed turreted hood shooter.
• Control and Automation: The team uses a custom Modular Autonomous library, PedroPathing for motion, and computer vision (OpenCV) for target tracking. Additionally, they utilize logistic regression and data logging to analyze performance and improve consistency.

Sustainability

The Hive maintains a long-term sustainability pipeline that spans from elementary to high school students, currently involving over 80 students. They ensure financial and operational continuity through grants, fundraisers, and a strong professional mentor network.
