New Bedford Creative
New Bedford Creative is the driving force behind implementing the city’s first-ever strategic arts and culture plan. We believe that a thriving creative community is a powerful partner in inspiring social, economic, and cultural growth. In our authentic seaport city, art is everywhere—encouraging fun, provoking thought, nurturing the soul, and ensuring that every person has the opportunity to experience a rich diversity of cultures.
Housed at the New Bedford Economic Development Council (NBEDC), we design and manage dynamic programs, initiatives, and public resources that empower local creatives and elevate the city's cultural landscape. Our core focus areas include:
- Creative Grantmaking & Funding: Direct investment into artists, cultural organizations, and community projects that drive local economic and cultural vitality.
- Capacity Building & Professional Development: Offering robust training, networking, and peer-to-peer mentoring sessions to support the professional growth of artists and creative non-profit leaders.
- Public Art Infrastructure: Cultivating vibrant civic spaces and integrating site-specific exhibitions, functional sculptures, and community art into the very fabric of municipal infrastructure.
- Placekeeping & Advocacy: Championing policies and permanent protections for artist studios and cultural anchors to ensure our creative sector remains resilient and sustainable.
This collaborative work is led by the NBEDC's Director of Creative Strategies, Creative Specialist, and a dedicated 28-member volunteer Creative Consortium, in close partnership with city departments and community advocates. Together, we are building an equitable, resilient, and thriving Creative Economy where art thrives and all are welcome.
