Old Five Points residents and the City of Durham have partnered for the 2nd annual “Build A Better Block Project” 2013 - the first in North Carolina. The goal is to revitalize blocks in distressed areas through a 30-day temporary revitalization project. We hope this short-term citizen-led project will lead to long-term investment and long-term tenants. The project promotes neighborhood pride, safety, local small businesses, startups, and most important reinvestment.
The Better Block Project started in April, 2010 in Texas, when a group of community organizers, neighbors, and property owners gathered together to revitalize a single commercial block in an underused neighborhood corridor. Since that time, Better Block projects have been developed throughout the nation and overseas, with many of the temporary infrastructure improvements and businesses made permanent creating neighborhood vitality, safety, and economic development.
