The Black Butterfly Foundation was founded on January 29, 2015 by a family affected with lupus since the early 1950's. With five family members who are currently living with the disease and six who lost their battle, the foundation's goal is to increase awareness of the lupus disease and assist in raising money to find a cure.

Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body such as the skin, joints or organs. In lupus, something goes wrong with the immune system, which is the part of the body that fights off viruses, bacteria, and germs. The cause of lupus remains unknown, but there is solid evidence that hormones, genetics and environmental factors play a role. There is no known cure for lupus, but current treatments focus on improving the quality of life through controlling symptoms and minimizing flare-ups.

On August 3, 2018, the Black Butterfly Foundation added Breast Cancer to the fight and has worked diligently to assist in raising awareness of the two diseases.

Breast cancer occurs when cells begin to grow abnormally in the breast. There are many risk factors for breast cancer, but researchers believe that hormonal, lifestyle and environmental factors increase your risk. Due to early detection and personalized treatment, the breast cancer survival rate has increased and survivors are living a long and healthier life.

The vision of the Black Butterfly Foundation is to join the fight against lupus and breast cancer by increasing awareness in the community. The mission of the Black Butterfly Foundation is to plan and implement annual events/activities to increase awareness and solicit volunteers and/or donors to support the causes.
