Danielle Festa
I am a conceptual realist painter and the founder of The Aplomb Project, a portrait initiative designed to highlight resilience in trauma survivors through collaborative mixed media oil paintings.
This project began in 2021 when I painted a portrait of my cousin, who had recently disclosed her experience with childhood incest. That initial work became a deeply meaningful expression of both personal pain and witnessed strength. What started as a single, cathartic portrait has since evolved into an ongoing body of work centered around healing, empowerment, and visibility.
Each portrait in The Aplomb Project is created in close collaboration with the survivor. Every aspect from the pose and clothing to the setting, color palette, and even the music I listen to while painting is chosen by the individual being portrayed. Textile is often incorporated into the work, symbolizing the survivor’s agency and their unique approach to reclaiming and expressing power.
These portraits are not for sale. They are gifted to the individuals who inspire them. The process is intentionally trauma-informed and aims to affirm each person’s voice, strength, and story.
Beyond the portraits, The Aplomb Project works to expand access to the therapeutic benefits of creative expression through community programs. We offer classes, workshops, and events designed to support individuals navigating trauma, with particular attention to those facing socio-economic barriers.
Through this work, my goal is to foster a community where art serves not only as a form of expression but as a tool for healing and connection.
