Walk for Alopecia National Spokesperson & Advocate for Change
Hi, I’m Deirdre Nero—an immigration lawyer, a proud advocate, and a woman who has lived with Alopecia Areata since age 21. I’m honored to serve as both the National Spokesperson and National Advocacy Ambassador for the Walk for Alopecia.
Like nearly 7 million people in the U.S., I’ve faced the unpredictable challenge of hair loss—moving from patchy thinning to complete scalp, brow, eyelash, and body hair loss. But more than statistics, this journey taught me the power of vulnerability—and the strength we gain through community.
A Journey from Alone to Advocating
For years, I suffered in silence. My identity, worth, and femininity felt tied to my hair. But in 2011, at my first NAAF conference, everything shifted - I saw others who looked like me and understood what I was experiencing. That sense of belonging was the beginning of my healing.
Since then, I’ve transformed my pain into purpose:
Legislative Liaison & Advocate—Traveling to Washington, D.C., I’ve advocated for critical policy advances including house and senate bills advocating for wig coverage and helping bring alopecia into the FDA’s Patient-Focused Drug Development Initiative.
Board Leadership & Advocacy Chair—Serving on NAAF’s Board and chairing the Advocacy Committee, I helped amplify the voices of people living with alopecia.
Support & Representation—From support groups in Miami to national stages, I share my truth loudly and proudly—with or without a wig.
Taking the Stage for Change
This May, I stepped into the role of National Spokesperson and Advocacy Ambassador for the Walk for Alopecia and Advocacy programs for NAAF. I’m proud to lead our San Francisco flagship walk event for the 3rd year, and help bring advocacy, joy, and community to every corner of the movement.
When I speak, I speak from experience—a woman who has lived through the fear, the isolation, and the doubt. When I stand tall and bald before an audience or policymaker, I’m not just a voice; I’m a symbol of resilience and belonging.
