Transformative Play - Roman Schramm
Roman Schramm is a visual artist in Berlin-Neukölln. He designs guided roleplay as participatory art: you move, talk and decide in character. There’s no audience. Everyone in the room plays.
His work is about rediscovering something most of us knew how to do as children: stepping into a role, building a shared world and believing in it. It happens in groups, with a clear structure and someone guiding you.
At Studio Schramm there’s the weekly Roleplay Lab, an evening for working with feelings through play, and longer scenarios with their own themes, like Language of Plants (you take turns being a plant), Embodying AI (you take turns being an AI) and Voyage to Italy (you play a couple). You don’t need experience, a costume or a script, and you can step out any time. The Lab runs in English, the longer scenarios in English or German.
Roman has worked with roleplay since 2013 and has presented his work at, among others, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Badischer Kunstverein, Museum Sinclair Haus and Knutepunkt Oslo.
