Article 1, section 27 of the PA Constitution:

The people have a right to clean air, pure water, and to the preservation of the natural, scenic, historic and esthetic values of the environment. Pennsylvania's public natural resources are the common property of all the people, including generations yet to come. As trustee of these resources, the Commonwealth shall conserve and maintain them for the benefit of all the People.

Our Contemporary Landscape is an exhibition of work by the local artist collective Pittsburgh Coexistence. Works of art were created in response to the theme of Our Contemporary Landscape, centered on lived experience and extending to commentary on the cumulative impacts of industrial operations in Appalachia, as well as environmental (in)justice.

Pittsburgh Coexistence is a group of artists committed to highlighting interconnection, (in) justice, and lived experience. Including folks who were born & raised, have or currently live in Appalachia, and folks who are transplants to our neck of the woods.

As artists living within the commonwealth of Pennsylvania, within the United States of America, coexisting on this planet at this moment, we demand accountability for our shared health, including the health of environments, ecosystems, and the communities that live within them, including biotic and abiotic beings (ie “we”).

We have the right to healthy air, soil, water, ecosystems, and neighborhoods. In our epoch, the Anthropocene, decision makers, i.e., the rich and powerful, have and continue to choose

corporate wellbeing (profit) over people and the environment. These violent choices, which place the burden of cumulative impacts on communities and ecosystems, must end. Our health is our wealth. When is enough, enough?
