Founded in 1882, the Somerset County Historical Society is dedicated to finding, saving, and sharing the rich history of Somerset County, New Jersey. We accomplish this mission through various initiatives, including fostering a growing community of history enthusiasts of all ages. Our efforts also involve preserving and maintaining the Van Veghten House, recognized as a National and State Historic Site. In partnership with the County Cultural and Heritage Commission, we are restoring and creatively reusing the Howe Homestead. Additionally, we collect and maintain archives of manuscripts, photographs, and ephemera related to Somerset County history. Our library is filled with valuable state and local history books, as well as essential genealogy resources. We conduct research and assist the public with their genealogical and local history inquiries. To keep our community engaged, we communicate through a quarterly electronic newsletter, social media, video vignettes, and our website. We also publish materials and videos of local historical interest and host authors and speakers. Furthermore, we maintain a Revolutionary War Museum that highlights the 1778–1779 Middlebrook Encampment in Somerset.
