Kapu Cove

Kapu Cove is a traveling tiki bar with no permanent address. Not yet.

The story goes that Captain Makaio Kane was a rebellious sailor who had no interest in being told where to drop anchor. A storm off the Big Island settled the argument. He washed into a hidden cove at the foot of a volcano, found an abandoned hut, and inside it a journal of recipes left behind by someone who understood that the island gives and the island takes. Honor the cove and you drink well. Defy it and you answer to Pele.

We take that journal on the road. For one night at a time we turn an ordinary room into the cove: low light, dense greenery, carved masks, and a bar built like a shrine. Then we pour classic tiki properly, from the Beachbum Berry canon, with house-made orgeat, falernum and passion fruit syrup, and rums chosen for the night rather than the shelf.

No slushie machines. No blue curacao. No sad plastic monkey on the rim.

Every ticket includes a welcome cocktail and the vessel it arrives in, and the vessel is yours to keep. Those vessels are made here, not ordered in: sculpted in 3D on an iPad, cast in clay molds, then fired and glazed by hand in Charlotte. The glaze is reactive, so no two are ever alike. Some nights there are drinks that never make it onto the printed menu. You have to ask.

Hosted by The Tiki Nomad. Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, working toward a permanent home.

Follow along and you will hear about the next cove before anyone else does.
