ARTSWORKS is a Japanese non-profit organization dedicated to advancing contemporary music through artistic excellence, international collaboration, and the cultivation of future generations of artists. Founded and led by internationally acclaimed percussionist Kuniko Kato, the organization serves as a dynamic platform where performance, education, commissioning, and cultural exchange converge.
Guided by the belief that artistic innovation flourishes through collaboration across cultures and generations, ARTSWORKS develops ambitious projects that connect internationally renowned composers, performers, emerging artists, and local communities. Its activities range from producing world-class concerts and festivals to artist residencies, educational initiatives, and cross-disciplinary collaborations that expand the possibilities of contemporary performance.
A hallmark of the organization's work is inc. percussion days, an annual artist incubation program celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2026. Over the past decade, the program has nurtured a remarkable new generation of percussionists, many of whom have gone on to establish successful professional careers while forming an expanding international creative network. The project has become one of Japan's leading platforms for artistic mentorship and professional development in contemporary percussion.
Recent highlights include the nationwide STEVE REICH PROJECT celebrating Steve Reich's 90th birthday, featuring performances by Japan's finest emerging percussionists under Kuniko Kato's artistic direction. Widely acclaimed by audiences and presenters alike, the project culminates in the REICH90 North American Tour, bringing this distinctive Japanese artistic vision to New York, Los Angeles, and Vancouver. ARTSWORKS also continues to champion landmark projects devoted to the music of Iannis Xenakis and Arvo Pärt, reaffirming its commitment to presenting the defining voices of contemporary music with exceptional artistic integrity.
