I’m Lakaiya Smith, also known as Chef Kai—the heart and hands behind Blue Plate Co. Blue Plate Co. was born from my love of being in the kitchen at home, where I took pride in creating beautiful meals that brought smiles to the faces of the people I love most.

The drive behind Blue Plate Co. is creating that same shared experience in the homes of others.

I was born and raised in Indianapolis, attended culinary school in 2018, and earned my degrees in Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management. Shortly after, Blue Plate Co. was founded—originally as Kai Cooks—until a loved one noticed that every dish I served was presented on a blue plate, often referring to it as the “Blue Plate Special.” That moment marked the beginning of Blue Plate Co. in 2023.

Since then, my goal has been to consistently create bespoke dining experiences through meals that feel like home.
