NYS Baroque

NYS Baroque

NYS Baroque performs music of the Renaissance, Baroque and early Classical periods on period instruments with what the Syracuse Post-Standard hails as “[an] exquisite balance of sound and astounding synchronicity”.

Led by Artistic Director and lutenist Deborah Fox, NYS Baroque offers a subscription concert series comprising five programs performed in Ithaca and Syracuse. Repertoire, chosen with our flexible ensemble in mind, ranges from orchestral to choral and chamber music. Orchestral music is performed without conductor. Our artists are the finest American early music musicians on the scene, complemented by guest artists from as far away as Australia.

Now in our 32nd season, NYS Baroque was founded in 1988 by oboist Peter Hedrick and bassoonist Elizabeth Hedrick. The ensemble has a rich and exciting history in the Finger Lakes area and beyond. Awarded Early Music America’s “Early Music Brings History Alive” award in 2006, NYS Baroque’s Arts in Education program invites yearly collaborations with local teachers and students. Recent guest appearances include performances at the Skaneateles Festival, Indiana Early Music Festival, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with the choirs of Cornell University, Handel’s Messiah with the choirs of St. Paul’s Cathedral in Buffalo and a reconstruction of Jean-Jacques Mouret’s 1734 ballet Pygmalion with the New York Baroque Dance Company at Cornell University.
