Japan Performing Arts, Inc.

Japan Performing Arts, Inc. is a New York State registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to introducing and preserving Japanese culture through traditional performing arts.

Our programs feature curated kimono presentations and cultural lectures that explore the historical, artistic, and social significance of traditional attire. Rather than presenting kimono as fashion shows, each program highlights specific themes related to intangible cultural heritage, craftsmanship, regional traditions, or seasonal customs.

Additional programming includes Japanese classical dance (Nihon Buyo), Bon Odori community dance workshops, and collaborative performances incorporating traditional instruments such as koto, shamisen, and shinobue flute. The organization is the only group in New York presenting traditional kagura ritual dance, showcasing this rare cultural heritage to local audiences.

Japan Performing Arts, Inc. has been supported by New York State and City arts grants, demonstrating sustained recognition of its contributions. The organization presents two seasonal performances each year, in spring and autumn, highlighting curated traditional arts and cultural presentations that reflect the changing seasons and associated customs.

Through live performances, educational outreach, and community engagement, we strive to promote cross-cultural understanding and create accessible opportunities for diverse audiences to experience the depth and richness of traditional Japanese arts. The organization also conducts volunteer outreach programs, including visits to hospitals and care facilities, bringing live traditional music and meaningful cultural experiences to patients.
