National Coalition Against Censorship
National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC) is an alliance of over 60 non-profit organizations dedicated to safeguarding free expression as a fundamental human right and keystone of democracy. NCAC safeguards freedom of expression through education, direct intervention, program work, and advocacy. We defend public access to art and we educate and empower young people to assert their own free expression rights. NCAC was founded following the 1973 Supreme Court decision in Miller v. California, which set new standards for legal “obscenity.” Our prescient founders were concerned about the long-term ramifications of a Supreme Court holding which narrowed protections for sexual expression and opened the door to obscenity prosecutions.
