Orfield Laboratories Inc. (est. 1971) is the world’s only independent, multi-sensory design research and consulting firm. Located in the historic Sound 80 Studios building, Orfield specializes in human perception as related to the fields of Architecture, Design, and Product Development. For over fifty years, Orfield has been focused on the user, the products, the places, and their relationship with one another, in order to honor the concept of user experience as the highest order of solution in design. Working in all areas of design as related to human perception, the firm does research and consulting in architecture and product development. In Architecture, Orfield consults in Acoustics, AV, Lighting, Daylighting, Thermal Comfort, and Indoor Air Quality. Orfield has created the first multi-sensory design standards for Autism, Dementia, and a series of mental illnesses and other invisible disabilities. In the product development field, Orfield consults on many product types including appliances, vehicles, audio-visual systems, medical products, aircraft, tools, consumer electronics, etc. With a specialty in the studty of human perception and cognition, Orfield approaches each of these types with a special focus on human perceptual comfort, performance, and preference.
