Many of us disagree vehemently with the other side because we find their views/stances frightening. We can’t understand why they don’t find the same views frightening. When we have an opportunity to express our fears or main concerns, and have the other side listen with respect, the more likely it is that all of us can navigate through our fears and concerns together, in a way that builds trust.
In this deep-dive exercise, groups of red and blue participants take turns sharing their fears or main concerns while the other side listens in, and then later sharing what they learned from the listening. The goal is for participants to understand the concerns others have of your own political side, thinking through the sources of those concerns without dismissing them, and being able to express your fears or main concerns of the other side in a way that they might hear them.
